Stake TRX for Energy or rent it: how much TRX one USDT transfer a day needs

Figures measured from api.cutfee.com/pub/rates, api.cutfee.com/pub/tiers. The price moves; these endpoints answer with today's.

On 27 September 2026 at 20:07 UTC, the Energy for one USDT transfer a day to an address that holds USDT (65,000 Energy) took 6,828 TRX staked. The same transfer cost 1.95 TRX with Energy rented for one hour at Cutfee, and 6.50 TRX if the wallet burned TRX for it. Staking spends nothing per transfer but locks 6,828 TRX; renting spends 1.95 TRX each time and locks nothing.

Measured against rent, those 6,828 TRX are 3,501 days of one rented transfer a day, about nine and a half years. Measured against burning, they are 1,050 days. That ratio decides whether staking makes sense for you, and the rest of this article is the arithmetic behind it, with a table you can read your own volume off.

Three ways to pay for the same transfer

A USDT transfer needs Energy. Whoever sends it has three ways to have that Energy, and the network does not care which one they use:

Way What you give up For one transfer to an address with USDT To an address with no USDT (131,000 Energy)
Burn TRX, gone for good 6.50 TRX 13.10 TRX
Rent for 1 hour TRX, gone for good 1.95 TRX 3.93 TRX
Stake nothing is spent, but the TRX is locked 6,828 TRX staked, once a day 13,761 TRX staked, once a day

The burn, rent and first stake figure are our public API at the minute above (/pub/rates and /pub/tiers). The 13,761 is the network's own arithmetic on the same reading, which is how our API computes the 6,828 as well: Energy × total staked TRX ÷ the network's daily Energy pool. At 20:07 UTC that pool was 180,000,000,000 Energy shared among 18,907,283,245 staked TRX, so one staked TRX earned about 9.52 Energy a day.

The calculator: your volume, three prices

Transfers a day to addresses that already hold USDT, at the prices above:

Transfers a day Burn, per 30 days Rent, per 30 days Stake needed
1 195 TRX 58.50 TRX 6,828 TRX
5 975 TRX 292.50 TRX 34,140 TRX
20 3,900 TRX 1,170 TRX 136,560 TRX
100 19,500 TRX 5,850 TRX 682,800 TRX

For your own number, multiply: transfers a day × 30 × 1.95 for renting, × 6.50 for burning, and transfers a day × 6,828 for the stake. Count each transfer to an address with no USDT as about two: 3.93 TRX rented, 13.10 burned, 13,761 staked. The stake column is a few TRX generous, because 6,828 is rounded up from 6,827.6 per transfer.

How long a stake takes to pay off

Staked TRX is not spent: you can unstake it and have every coin back. So a stake does not "pay off" the way a purchase does. What it costs you is the TRX being locked, and what it earns you is the rent or the burn you no longer pay. Per transfer a day:

  • Against renting: 6,828 ÷ 1.95 = 3,501 days. The rent you avoid in a year, 711.75 TRX, is about 10.4% of the stake.
  • Against burning: 6,828 ÷ 6.50 = 1,050 days. The burn you avoid in a year, 2,372.50 TRX, is about 34.7% of the stake.

The ratio does not depend on your volume: twenty transfers a day need twenty times the stake and avoid twenty times the rent. What changes it is where the TRX comes from. If you already hold that much TRX and would keep it anyway, staking it for Energy costs you nothing in TRX and saves 1.95 on every transfer. If you would have to buy TRX to stake, you are putting 3,501 days of rent into a coin whose price moves both ways, to save 1.95 TRX a day.

What the 6,828 does not tell you

Four things about staking that the one figure hides:

  • The figure moves. Your share of the daily pool is your stake divided by everyone's, so when others stake more, the same TRX earns less Energy and you need more to cover the same transfer. The number above is true at 20:07 UTC on 27 September, not a constant.
  • It is Energy per day, not per transfer. Staked Energy recovers gradually over 24 hours. 6,828 TRX covers one transfer every 24 hours; two transfers in the same morning need twice the stake, or a burn for the second.
  • Getting the TRX back takes 14 days. After you unstake, the network holds the TRX for 14 days (getUnfreezeDelayDays in its chain parameters) before you can withdraw it. Rented Energy has no such tail: it simply ends after the hour.
  • A new recipient doubles it. A transfer to an address with no USDT needs about 131,000 Energy, so a stake sized for 65,000 falls short and the wallet burns TRX for the rest. Why a new address costs twice as much.

Staked TRX also carries voting rights on TRON, and voting pays rewards; that is a separate calculation from the Energy, and it is not counted here.

Who staking is for, and who it is not

Stake if you hold thousands of TRX that you are not going to sell, send about the same number of USDT transfers every day, and can live with a 14-day wait to get the TRX back. A payout wallet that sends twenty transfers a day and has 140,000 TRX sitting idle is the typical case.

Rent if your transfers are irregular, if you send a few a week, or if the TRX you would need to stake is not already yours. You pay only on the days you send: send 1.95 TRX from the wallet that will send the USDT, and the Energy is delegated back to that address within a minute and stays for an hour. One payment can be up to 80 TRX, which buys up to 2,666,666 Energy, about 41 transfers within that hour. If the transfers come from your own system rather than a person, the same purchase works through the Cutfee API.

Burn if you send once and do not want to make a second transfer first. It is the only way that needs no step at all, and each transfer costs 4.55 TRX more than renting.

The network's pool, straight from a TRON node. TotalEnergyLimit ÷ TotalEnergyWeight is the Energy one staked TRX earns a day; the address is the zero address, because a node reports the totals only for an account that exists:
